Student Needs for Differentiation

The Student Seeks:
  • Affirmation - Self-esteem
  • Contribution - Self-efficacy
  • Power - Increasing the domain one has over one's world
  • Purpose - Drive to seek meaning
  • Challenge - Reach and extend
"Teaching is fundamentally about building lives. Differentiating instruction focuses on the uniqueness of each child's life as well as its commonalities with all other lives. To build lives in differentiated classroom means building them both collectively and individually."

It's important to understand what a child needs and how to teach the total individual. The physiological needs are hopefully met by the parents, in the child's home. Once children leave their homes and come to school they still need to feel safe. When a child feels safe they also need to feel valued in the classroom. This will build their self-esteem and create an environment where children have a desire learn; giving them purpose. I understand the importance, as a teacher, to meet the needs of the child. I feel I can create and classroom of safety and learning. ~ Colleen

  1. This is great... wonderful connections between Carol's list of students' needs to Maslow! You'll get all 5 points for this (especially in light of your bad luck in losing one of your posts!). But, I am very interested in even MORE personal reflection -- your ideas about HOW you will meet these needs, and how you will stay enthusicastic about doing it. 5pts.

  2. I really like this post, Colleen. Throughout my education Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs has always been one of my favorite topics to study. I think it is so important and relevant to us as future teachers and relating to our students. When we can understand this principle we will be able to better educate our students and really help them to succeed.
